Release and pickup
The day the box is opened again
Release days are crowded. Plan the box's part of it before you go in: who may open it, what they must bring, and where the contents go next.

A box is opened only by an identified person the rental agreement allows, or by a valid agent acting for the renter. That rule does not bend on release day, or for a relative with a good reason. It is the same rule that kept the box closed to everyone else for years.
So the person collecting needs three things: government-issued photo ID, a place on the rental agreement or valid authority as an agent, and an appointment. Visits are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM, at 3562 N Ocean Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. If you are the renter, keep one valid photo ID outside the box, or plan how you will get one.
If someone else will collect for you, settle it now. A power of attorney is one route. Adding a person to the rental agreement is another. How a third-party pickup is arranged here is TODO_FACT: how is a third-party pickup arranged, and what must the collector bring?.
Check the contents against the signed intake inventory before you leave. The visit log records every identified visit, so if an agent opened the box while you were away, the visit is on record. What to sort before a sentence is where this process starts, and legal process explains what happens if a court order reached the box in the meantime.
What matters
- Only identified people on the rental agreement, or a valid agent, may open the box.
- Bring government-issued photo ID, and keep one valid ID outside the box for this day.
- Book an appointment. Visits are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM.
- Compare the contents with the signed inventory before you leave.
- Arrange any pickup by someone else in writing before the sentence starts.
How we handle it
- Every person entering is identified against government-issued photo ID, and every visit is logged.
- A box can be held by one person, jointly, or by a trust or company, and its agreement names who may enter.
- Who can collect on release: TODO_FACT: who besides the renter can collect contents on release?
- Contents sent out by mail: TODO_FACT: can contents be mailed out after release, and how?
Where we stop
If a valid warrant, subpoena or court order reaches the box before release, we honour it. We will not hand contents to someone the rental agreement does not allow, however good the reason.
Short answers
- Can the box stay rented after release?
- Release does not end a rental. The term runs as agreed, and you can keep using the box by appointment.
- What if my photo ID expired while I was inside?
- Call before you book the appointment. What we can accept: TODO_FACT: does Florida Intervault accept an expired government photo ID with other proof?
- Can I close the box early once I am out?
- You can ask. What happens to the rest of a prepaid term: TODO_FACT: refund or credit on prepaid rent if a box closes early?
Questions people ask about this
More on how it works
Agent access by power of attorney
A Florida power of attorney names who acts for you: how it is signed, who may serve, what to ask.
Prepaid multi-year terms
A multi-year term takes 20% to 25% off each year's rent. The smallest box on three years is $636 a year.
If the rent lapses
Unpaid box rent starts a clock. Florida's bank rule, what our agreement says, and how to keep the clock from starting.
Mail-in and out of county
Documents mailed from anywhere in the US go into your box, and the key comes back. Valuables are a separate question.
Settle it before the date, not after.
A short call is usually enough to know whether a box is the right answer. If it is not, we will say so. Attorneys and family members are welcome to call on a client's behalf.
